Thu Jan 09 14:31:01 UTC 2025: ## Musk’s Ambitious Cost-Cutting Plan Faces Steep Challenges
**WASHINGTON, January 9, 2025** – Elon Musk, appointed by President-elect Donald Trump to lead a government cost-cutting initiative, has admitted that his $2 trillion spending reduction target is highly ambitious. While aiming for this significant cut to the $6.8 trillion federal budget, Musk acknowledged that a more realistic outcome might be around $1 trillion.
The Tesla CEO and X owner is heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) alongside Vivek Ramaswamy. This task force faces a formidable challenge, as approximately two-thirds of current federal spending is allocated to programs President-elect Trump has pledged not to cut, including Social Security, Medicare, defense, veterans’ benefits, and interest payments on the national debt ($36 trillion).
Trump’s plans also include tax cuts and stricter immigration enforcement, but he has yet to secure congressional support for his legislative agenda. The ambitious cost-cutting goals therefore face significant political hurdles.
