Sun Jan 12 15:51:15 UTC 2025: ## Kollam Man’s Vision Saved After Tree Twig Pierces Eye in Accident

**Thiruvananthapuram, January 12, 2025** – The vision of a 24-year-old Kollam man was saved thanks to a complex, multi-disciplinary surgery at KIMSHEALTH hospital. The man suffered a serious eye injury when a tree twig pierced his eye during a two-wheeler accident.

The accident occurred when the man’s two-wheeler collided with another vehicle, causing him to fall and impale himself on a 15-cm long tree branch. Over half the twig penetrated his eye below the pupil, extending into his nasal cavity. He also sustained severe skull injuries after his helmet came off.

After being resuscitated, the man underwent a challenging hour-and-a-half surgery. The surgical team, comprising specialists from neurosurgery, ENT, ophthalmology, and oral and maxillofacial surgery, carefully removed the twig without damaging the pupil. They also repaired a wound on the bridge of his nose using an endoscopic procedure and controlled bleeding through nasal packing.

Dr. Arun P.S, consultant neurosurgeon and lead of the treatment team, highlighted the high risk of vision loss due to damage to surrounding blood vessels and nerves, despite the pupil remaining intact.

The patient was discharged after a ten-day stay, having made a full recovery. The successful outcome is attributed to the coordinated efforts of the multi-specialty team at KIMSHEALTH.
