Sun Jan 12 17:33:14 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru Ranks Third Worst Globally for Traffic Congestion

**BENGALURU, INDIA** – Bengaluru has once again earned an unenviable global ranking, placing third on the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index for the world’s slowest cities. The Dutch firm’s annual report reveals that the average travel time for 10 kilometers in Bengaluru is now 30 minutes and 10 seconds, a 50-second increase from 2023. This puts it behind only Barranquilla and Kolkata.

The report highlights a significant worsening of Bengaluru’s traffic situation. In 2022, the city was already ranked second globally, and its average speed of 18 km/h remains slower than many other major cities including London, Dublin, Milan, Lima, and Toronto. The city’s congestion is attributed to a rapidly growing number of private vehicles; Bengaluru now boasts approximately 2.5 million private cars, with nearly 2,000 new registrations daily. This surge in vehicles is straining the city’s existing infrastructure.

Domestically, Kolkata holds the top spot for India’s most congested city, with Bengaluru a close second. Pune also makes its debut on the global list, ranking fourth. The worsening traffic situation continues to pose significant challenges for Bengaluru residents and underscores the need for effective urban planning and transportation solutions.
