**DAMASCUS, Syria** – Syrian intelligence and security forces have thwarted a plot by ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) to bomb the Sayyida Zeinab shrine, a revered Shia Muslim site in a Damascus suburb, state media reported Saturday. Several suspects, including two Lebanese nationals and a Palestinian refugee from Lebanon, have been arrested, according to the Syrian Interior Ministry, which released photographs of the suspects and confiscated materials including explosives, weapons, and communication devices.
The shrine, believed to house the tomb of the granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad, has been a frequent target of attacks in the past. ISIS claimed responsibility for deadly attacks in 2016 and a bombing in July 2023 near the mausoleum. A car bombing in 2008 also resulted in significant casualties. The shrine’s importance as a major pilgrimage site for Shia Muslims makes it a prime target for extremist groups.
A source within Syria’s intelligence agency told SANA that the General Intelligence Directorate is actively working to counter threats against all Syrian citizens. Al Jazeera’s Hamza Mohamed reported from Damascus, highlighting the significance of the shrine and its history of attacks. While Iran-backed guards previously provided security at the shrine, they withdrew last month.
The foiled attack underscores the ongoing security challenges facing Syria, even after significant territorial losses for ISIS in recent years. The incident highlights the continued vulnerability of religious sites and the persistent threat posed by extremist groups.
