Sat Jan 11 17:23:14 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru Ranks Third Slowest Globally in Traffic Congestion in 2024
**Bengaluru, India (January 11, 2025)** – Bengaluru’s notorious traffic congestion has landed it in third place globally for slowest travel times in 2024, according to the TomTom Traffic Index. The Dutch location technology firm’s report reveals that the average time to travel 10 kilometers in Bengaluru was 30 minutes and 10 seconds – a 50-second increase compared to 2023. This places Bengaluru behind Barranquilla, Colombia, and Kolkata, India.
The city’s congestion level index jumped 4% to 68, reflecting a decrease in average speed to 17.6 km/hour (0.5 km/hour slower than in 2023). The worst day for Bengaluru drivers in 2024 was October 5th, with a 10 km journey taking 39 minutes and 21 seconds. Rush hour travel times averaged 38 minutes and 50 seconds in the morning and 41 minutes and 59 seconds in the evening. The report estimates that Bengaluru drivers lost a total of 117 hours due to congestion in 2024.
However, Ashish Verma of the Indian Institute of Science cautions that the TomTom index, while widely recognized, relies heavily on GPS data and may not fully capture the complexities of Bengaluru’s traffic situation. He points out limitations in accounting for factors like diverse transportation modes, seasonal variations, and urban planning policies. He suggests expanding the index to include metrics like emission levels and fuel consumption for a more comprehensive assessment.
