**Chennai, January 11, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government has rejected a proposal allowing licensed gun owners to shoot wild boars to control their population. Forest Minister K. Ponmudi stated that such a measure would lead to uncontrolled killing of the animals for meat, undermining existing regulations.
While acknowledging the concerns of farmers, raised by AIADMK MLA K.A. Sengottaiyan, Minister Ponmudi reiterated the state’s commitment to regulated culling by Forest Department officials only, in accordance with central legislation. He emphasized the need for caution and responsible wildlife management.
The government also announced plans to control the peafowl population by removing their eggs and to implement measures to keep wild animals within designated reserve forest areas. The Leader of the House, Duraimurugan, highlighted the importance of protecting wildlife, arguing that culling animals like tigers, wild boars, peacocks, and elephants would render reserve forests meaningless.
