**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, January 10, 2025** – The upcoming Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, expected to draw 40 crore devotees over 44 days, presents an unprecedented challenge to India’s telecom infrastructure. With 5G now widely available, the event is poised to become the most tele-dense gathering in history, putting immense strain on networks.
The Union government and telecom operators are working to ensure smooth communication during the massive pilgrimage. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that preparations are underway to handle peak capacity, drawing on experience from events like the Ram Janmabhoomi consecration and the G-20 Summit. However, he acknowledged the Kumbh Mela poses a far greater challenge.
To meet the expected surge in data demand, extensive upgrades are underway. Over 100 kilometers of new optical fiber has been laid, cell towers are receiving enhanced radio configurations, and 78 cells on wheels and 150 outdoor small cell solutions are being deployed to improve coverage in crowded areas.
Despite these preparations, the sheer density of pilgrims – sometimes exceeding half a dozen people per square meter – presents a significant hurdle. Network congestion is anticipated, potentially limiting simultaneous high-bandwidth activities like video calls. However, disaster management centers are being established by telecom operators to ensure reliable emergency communication.
Minister Vaishnaw described the preparations as a “template for the world,” highlighting the innovative approach to managing telecom infrastructure during events of this scale. The success of this initiative will set a precedent for handling future large-scale gatherings with high data demands.
