Thu Jan 09 16:41:07 UTC 2025: ## Final Monsoon Rainspell to Lash Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
**Chennai, January 9, 2025:** Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are bracing for a final bout of northeast monsoon rainfall, expected to begin Saturday and last until January 14. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, forecasts moderate rainfall across several areas, with heavier downpours predicted for certain delta districts.
A cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal is the driving force behind this rainspell. Delta districts, including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, and Mayiladuthurai, could see up to 12 cm of rain in isolated locations on January 12. Coastal areas will experience isolated showers beginning Friday, intensifying over the weekend, before spreading inland. By January 14, the rainfall is expected to shift towards south Tamil Nadu, though isolated showers may continue in northern areas, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Meanwhile, some areas of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, may experience misty mornings. The minimum temperature in Karur’s Paramathi dropped to a low of 16°C, with the Nilgiris district anticipating continued cold and potential ground frost. Chennai’s maximum temperature is predicted to remain around 29-30°C, with a chance of light rain on Friday.
S. Balachandran, Additional Director General of Meteorology, Chennai, stated that the RMC is monitoring for signs of the northeast monsoon’s withdrawal. The current cyclonic circulation will provide a respite from the ongoing dry spell.
