WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former President Jimmy Carter was laid to rest Thursday following a state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. The service, attended by all living former presidents and their spouses (with the exception of Michelle Obama), marked the culmination of a week of tributes honoring the 39th president, who passed away at age 100 on December 29th.

President Joe Biden delivered a eulogy, reflecting on Carter’s legacy and their shared history. The service, which included musical performances by the Armed Forces Chorus and eulogies from former White House staffers and close associates, followed a military procession from the US Capitol, where Carter lay in state. Vice President Kamala Harris also paid tribute to Carter’s significant humanitarian work and diplomatic achievements, notably his role in brokering peace between Israel and Egypt.

A rare display of bipartisan unity was evident in a private meeting of former presidents before the service, reminiscent of the gathering held for President George H.W. Bush in 2018. Following the Washington service, Carter’s body was returned to his hometown of Plains, Georgia, for a private burial at Maranatha Baptist Church, next to his wife, Rosalynn. His casket rested beneath a wooden cross he had crafted himself.

Despite facing significant challenges during his presidency, including inflation and the Iran hostage crisis, Carter’s post-presidency work with The Carter Center focused on global health, conflict resolution, and human rights, earning him widespread admiration for his dedication to public service and unwavering decency.
