Fri Jan 10 01:11:29 UTC 2025: ## RPG Chairman Slams L&T Chief’s 90-Hour Work Week Proposal Amidst Salary Controversy

**Mumbai, India** – A heated debate on work-life balance has erupted following L&T Chairman SN Subrahmanyan’s suggestion that employees should work 90 hours a week, including Sundays. This has drawn sharp criticism, notably from RPG Group Chairman Harsh Goenka, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to denounce the idea as a “recipe for burnout.”

Subrahmanyan, in an undated video circulating online, reportedly advocated for a six-day work week and expressed a desire to extend working hours to 90 hours, even suggesting employees work on Sundays. He stated, “I regret I am not able to make you work on Sundays. If I can make you work on Sundays, I will be more happy, because I work on Sundays.” His comments echo similar sentiments expressed earlier by Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, who proposed a 70-hour work week for young professionals.

Goenka countered Subrahmanyan’s proposal with a sarcastic remark, suggesting renaming Sunday to “Sun-duty.” He emphasized the importance of “working smart, not slave[ing],” highlighting the necessity of work-life balance. The exchange has reignited the ongoing online discussion surrounding employee well-being and the pressures of demanding corporate environments.

The controversy comes amidst reports that Subrahmanyan earned a staggering ₹51 crore (approximately $6.2 million USD) in FY2024, a 43.11% increase from the previous year. This salary is 534.57 times the median salary of L&T employees, further fueling criticism of his proposal for extended working hours. The significant disparity between executive compensation and employee salaries has added another layer to the debate. The comments from both Goenka and Subrahmanyan highlight the starkly contrasting views on the ideal work-life balance within India’s corporate landscape.
