**Thrissur, Kerala, January 10, 2025** – Renowned Malayalam playback singer P. Jayachandran passed away on Thursday night at the age of 80. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Thrissur after battling cancer for an extended period. His body was brought to his ancestral home in Poonkunnathu, Thrissur, and will be kept for public viewing at the Music and Drama Academy Hall before being taken back home. The funeral will take place at 3:30 PM on Saturday at the Cheendamangalam Paliyam Tharavadu crematorium in Paravoor. Public viewing will also be held at the family home in Cheendamangalam Paliyam Tharavadu from 9 AM to 12 PM on Saturday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating that Jayachandran’s life was blessed with a legendary voice whose songs will continue to touch the hearts of future generations. He offered his sympathies to Jayachandran’s family and fans.
Jayachandran’s death has evoked widespread grief, with tributes pouring in from across the state and nation. Governor, Chief Minister, ministers, the Leader of the Opposition, prominent figures from the film industry, and various political leaders have expressed their sorrow.
Throughout his illustrious career, Jayachandran sang over 16,000 songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. He was a recipient of numerous accolades, including the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer, five Kerala State Film Awards, the Kerala government’s JC Daniel Award, the Tamil Nadu government’s Kalaimamani Award, and four Tamil Nadu State Awards. He is survived by his wife Lalitha, daughter Lakshmi, and son Dinanathan, also a singer.
