CHENNAI: The Indian film industry mourns the loss of renowned playback singer Jayachandran, who passed away after a long and celebrated career spanning over 50 years. Born in Ernakulam, Kerala, Jayachandran’s passion for music began in his youth. Initially a mridangam player, he moved to Chennai and gained early recognition performing at a fundraiser for India-Pakistan border security.
This led to opportunities in the Malayalam film industry, and his career truly took off. He won a Kerala State Award in 1972 for his song “Neelagiriyude” composed by M.S. Viswanathan. His Tamil film debut was with “Thangachimizh Pol” in the film *Mannipayil*, also composed by M.S. Viswanathan. He went on to achieve widespread popularity with songs like “Vasanthakkala Naathegalile” from the film *Moondru Mudichu*, featuring Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.
While he began his career with M.S. Viswanathan, Jayachandran’s collaborations with Ilaiyaraaja propelled him to greater heights, with songs like “Vaazhkaiye Vesham” from *Aarilirundhu Arubathu Varai* (Rajinikanth) becoming particularly memorable for its poignant portrayal of human despair. Other notable Ilaiyaraaja collaborations include “Thaalaattuthae Vaanam” from *Kaadal Meengal* (Kamal Haasan) and “Mayanginen Solla Thayanginen” from *Naane Raja Naane Mantri* (Vijayakanth).
His most iconic song, however, remains “Raasathi Unna Kaanatha Nenju” from *Vaidehi Kaathirundhaal*, a song that continues to resonate with audiences across generations. He sang multiple hit songs in that film. His repertoire extends beyond Ilaiyaraaja; he also collaborated extensively with A.R. Rahman, with songs like “Kollaiyile Thennai Vaithu” from *Kaadhalan* and “En Mel Vizhundha” from *May Madham* showcasing his versatility. He also sang the popular “Sollamaale Yaar Paarthathu” in *Poove Unakkaga* (S.A. Rajkumar) and “Rajyamaa” from *Baba*. His collaboration with A.R. Rahman on “Oru Deivam Thandha Poove” from *Kannathil Muthamittal* is another significant contribution. His final song was “Kanavellaam” in Ajith’s *Kireedam*.
Jayachandran’s sweet and soulful voice graced over 15,000 songs, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of music lovers across India. His contribution to Indian cinema will be remembered for generations to come.
