**KYIV/MOSCOW** – Ukraine launched a significant surprise offensive into Russia’s Kursk region this week, capturing several settlements and inflicting heavy casualties on Russian forces. The five-month-old counteroffensive has seen Ukrainian troops advance towards the regional capital, Kursk, utilizing combined arms tactics including electronic warfare to neutralize Russian drones and HIMARS strikes to disrupt reinforcements. Russian military bloggers reported significant losses, including over 38,000 troops and hundreds of pieces of military equipment. Ukraine claims to have captured 860 Russian prisoners of war.
Simultaneously, intense fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, particularly near Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad in Donetsk, where Russian forces are focusing their efforts despite reportedly reducing their reliance on armored vehicles due to losses and the effectiveness of Ukrainian anti-tank weaponry.
The Ukrainian military’s success has been partly attributed to its growing capabilities in unmanned and long-range systems. Recent attacks include a drone strike on a Russian gas condensate terminal near Leningrad and the downing of two Russian Mi-8 helicopters by a Ukrainian Magura V sea drone. The Ukrainian government announced ambitious plans to significantly boost its defense industry, aiming to produce thousands of cruise missiles, drone missiles, and long-range drones in 2024 as part of a $30 billion investment. This investment is aimed at increasing domestic production of weapons from an estimated $7 billion in 2024.
The conflict has also seen a devastating Russian missile strike on Zaporizhzhia, resulting in at least 13 deaths and numerous injuries.
Amidst the ongoing fighting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on potential peace proposals, emphasizing that any deployment of a multinational peacekeeping force should align with Ukraine’s eventual integration into NATO. He noted President-elect Donald Trump’s apparent support for this idea. The potential for a negotiated settlement that freezes the conflict along current lines remains uncertain. Russia’s ability to replace lost equipment is increasingly questionable, with estimates suggesting significant depletion of its tank and armored vehicle reserves.
