TIRUPATI, Andhra Pradesh – A stampede at a token distribution center for the Vaikunta Dwara Darshan at the Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala on Wednesday night resulted in the tragic deaths of six people and injuries to over 40 others. The incident, unprecedented in the history of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), has exposed significant lapses in crowd management by both police and TTD officials.

The tragedy unfolded at the Ramanaidu Municipal High School grounds in Bairagipatteda as thousands of devotees, many having waited for hours without food or water, surged towards the gates when they were prematurely opened. The gates gave way under the pressure, triggering a chaotic stampede. Eyewitnesses reported that security personnel were overwhelmed by the sheer number of people. Videos circulating online show untrained individuals attempting CPR on the injured, further highlighting the lack of preparedness.

Preliminary investigations point to a lack of adequate barricades and poor crowd control measures as contributing factors. Sources indicate that officials were warned about the growing crowds but failed to take sufficient preventative action.
