TIRUPATI, Andhra Pradesh – A stampede at Tirupati’s Vaikuntha Dwar Darshan token distribution centers resulted in six deaths and injuries to several others. A report submitted to Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu by the Tirupati District Collector attributes the tragedy to the Deputy Superintendent of Police’s (DSP) overzealousness in opening gates, causing a sudden surge of devotees.

The report further criticizes the DSP’s inadequate response to the unfolding crisis, contrasting it with the swift action of the Superintendent of Police (SP) and his personnel who arrived on the scene to assist the pilgrims. Adding to the criticism, an ambulance driver parked his vehicle near the token counter and left, remaining unavailable for 20 crucial minutes. The Collector’s report directly links the deaths to the negligence of both the DSP and the ambulance driver.

TTD EO Shyamala Rao also corroborated the finding that the DSP’s actions were the primary cause of the stampede. A full investigation is underway.

Thirteen injured pilgrims remain hospitalized at SVIMS hospital, while others have been discharged. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is expected to visit Tirupati shortly to meet with the injured and announce compensation for the families of the deceased. The CM has expressed his anger at the officials involved and questioned their preparedness. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with Prime Minister Modi and Rahul Gandhi expressing their condolences.
