**KOCHI, Kerala – January 9, 2025** – Kerala’s fashion landscape has undergone a radical shift in the past decade, moving away from conservative styles to embrace global trends and individual expression, according to several fashion designers and influencers. The rise of social media, particularly Instagram, has been a key catalyst in this transformation.
The change is particularly evident among Gen Z, who are rejecting traditional notions of formal wear and embracing diverse styles. Influencers have played a crucial role in introducing global trends to the state, leading to a widespread adoption of styles like anti-fit tees, crop tops, bold prints, monochrome outfits, and a more fluid approach to gender in fashion.
“For a long time, fashion was about wearing branded clothes; but I always felt it was more about staying on trend,” says Abhirami Chaliyadath, a 21-year-old student from Kozhikode.
This shift extends beyond influencers. The viral popularity of clothing items on social media leads to high street brands replicating designs, ensuring trends spread rapidly. Designers are increasingly using social media for marketing, reaching a wider audience.
Comfort and individuality are key aspects of the new fashion scene. Layering, mixing and matching baggy separates, flared pants, and crochet tops are popular choices. The influence of hip-hop culture and a renewed interest in thrifting are also visible. Even men are experimenting with bolder colors and looser fits inspired by Korean fashion.
The change is not only stylistic but also societal. Parents are showing more support for their children’s fashion choices, a significant change from previous generations. The increased availability of trendy clothing through online stores like Zara and H&M further fuels the shift.
The overall impression is one of vibrant change, with Kerala’s fashion reflecting a more confident, inclusive, and globally-connected generation.
