Wed Jan 08 15:46:27 UTC 2025: ## Trump Seeks Supreme Court Intervention to Halt Hush Money Sentencing

**Washington, D.C. – January 8, 2025** – President-elect Donald Trump is appealing to the Supreme Court to block his scheduled sentencing this Friday in the New York hush money case. His legal team filed an emergency request on Wednesday, following New York courts’ refusal to postpone the proceeding.

Trump’s lawyers argue that the sentencing, overseen by Judge Juan M. Merchan, would cause “grave injustice and harm to the institution of the Presidency and the operations of the federal government.” They are seeking an immediate stay of the January 10th sentencing.

The Supreme Court has given New York prosecutors until Thursday to respond. While Judge Merchan has indicated he will not impose jail time, fines, or probation, Trump’s attorneys cite a separate Supreme Court ruling granting broad presidential immunity from criminal prosecution. They contend this ruling should have shielded some evidence used in the hush money trial, a claim Judge Merchan rejected. Trump was convicted in May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.
