**HONG KONG, January 9, 2025** – Chinese health authorities have confirmed a cluster of mpox cases caused by a new mutated strain, clade Ib. The outbreak originated with a foreigner who had recently traveled to and resided in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the epicenter of a wider mpox outbreak. Four additional cases have been identified among individuals who had close contact with the initial patient. All patients are exhibiting mild symptoms, including skin rashes and blisters.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a global public health emergency last August due to the spread of the clade Ib variant, which appears to be more easily transmissible than previous strains. The variant has already spread from the DRC to several neighboring countries. China, anticipating the possibility of an outbreak, implemented monitoring measures last August and classified mpox as a Category B infectious disease, allowing for swift emergency responses.
