**New Delhi, January 9, 2025** – The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has launched a nationwide initiative to combat tuberculosis (TB) within India’s prison system. A 100-day intensified campaign, mirroring a larger national effort, will be implemented across all states and union territories. The campaign aims to identify and treat undetected TB cases within correctional facilities, a high-risk population.
This initiative follows the December 7th launch of a broader national 100-day TB elimination campaign by Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda in Haryana. This larger campaign, spanning 347 districts, focuses on identifying “missing TB cases” and significantly reducing TB-related deaths. A key component of both campaigns involves deploying mobile, AI-enabled X-ray units and molecular testing technologies to improve diagnostic capabilities, particularly in underserved areas. The MHA’s focus on prisons is a crucial step in controlling and reducing the prevalence of TB within this vulnerable population.
