Wed Jan 08 12:08:56 UTC 2025: ## Kumbakonam Retailers Demand Government Regulation of Online Businesses
**Thanjavur, January 8, 2025** – The Kumbakonam Consumer Products Distributors Association has called on the central and state governments to introduce legislation regulating online businesses, citing a significant negative impact on the retail sector. A resolution passed at their general body meeting on Tuesday highlighted the threat to the livelihoods of lakhs of employees dependent on the retail trade.
The association further urged the government to address several tax-related concerns. They demanded the withdrawal of Goods and Services Tax (GST) levied on rent paid by retailers, citing substantial government over-collection since GST’s introduction. The association also opposes a recent 6% hike in property tax and the dual taxation imposed through profession tax and license fees. Finally, they expressed resentment over the imposition of garbage tax.
The meeting was presided over by Association president Vedam Murali, with the participation of V. Sathyanarayanan, Secretary of the All Traders Association, Kumbakonam.
