**Bengaluru, January 8, 2025** – A new Kannada film, *Haridasara Dinachari*, offers a unique cinematic portrayal of the 15th-century saint-composer Purandaradasa. Directed by Adelaide-based filmmaker Girish Nagaraja, the documentary-feature focuses on a day in the life of the renowned composer, weaving together voiceovers, songs, and stunning visuals.
Nagaraja, motivated by his lifelong passion for Kannada literature and devotional hymns, described the film as a “short musical” showcasing Purandaradasa’s daily routines and deeply rooted principles of social reform, inclusivity, and religious harmony. The film features acclaimed classical musician Vidyabhushana, who portrays Purandaradasa, performing rare compositions from Purandaradasa’s vast repertoire of 4.75 lakh songs. Vidyabhushana initially resisted the role, but Nagaraja’s persistence and a script rich in music and minimal dialogue convinced him.
The film’s visual beauty is a key component, with cinematographer Hari Raju M capturing breathtaking aerial shots of Hampi and serene sunrise scenes. The meticulous recreation of the historical setting, including finding an authentic-looking 15th-century tanpura, adds to the film’s authenticity. Filming locations included temples and archaeological sites in Karnataka, as well as the Dakshina Chitra Heritage Museum in Chennai, chosen to reflect the historical ambiance.
The film’s success is evident in positive audience response. The selection of 18 musical renderings, including nine rarely heard pieces, has been particularly praised. *Haridasara Dinachari* is currently playing in theaters. Nagaraja, whose family has deep roots in Kannada classical music and theatre, is already planning his next project, a film based on Bannanje Govindacharya’s Ramayana.
