**Mumbai, [Date of Publication]** – The Maharashtra state cabinet has announced that FASTags will become mandatory for all vehicles in the state starting April 1, 2025. This move aims to streamline toll payments and reduce congestion at toll plazas across the state.
FASTag, a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) device affixed to a vehicle’s windscreen, allows for cashless toll payments directly from a linked bank account. Drivers can pass through toll plazas without stopping, saving time and fuel. The system is interoperable nationwide, meaning a single FASTag can be used at any toll plaza in India.
While offering convenience and efficiency, users must maintain sufficient funds in their linked account. Insufficient balance will result in the FASTag being temporarily deactivated at the toll plaza, requiring cash payment. FASTags can be purchased from any NETC member bank.
The decision aligns with the nationwide push for electronic toll collection, aiming to modernize the transportation infrastructure in Maharashtra. The state government is expected to launch a public awareness campaign to educate citizens about the mandatory implementation and benefits of using FASTags.
