**SAO PAULO** – Indonesia has officially become a full member of the BRICS group of emerging economies, Brazil announced on Monday. The decision, which was initially endorsed by BRICS leaders in August 2023, marks a significant expansion of the bloc, seen by many as a growing counterweight to Western influence.
Brazil, holding the rotating presidency of BRICS in 2025, confirmed Indonesia’s acceptance into the alliance. The Indonesian government’s formal acceptance followed the formation of its new government last year. Brazil welcomed Indonesia’s entry, highlighting its significant economic size and population as valuable assets to the group’s efforts in reforming global governance and strengthening South-South cooperation.
BRICS, initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India, and China (with South Africa joining in 2010), has experienced significant expansion in recent years. In 2024, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE were added. Saudi Arabia has received an invitation to join, while Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia have formally applied for membership. Numerous other nations have also expressed interest. Indonesia’s addition further strengthens BRICS’s global reach and influence.
