Wed Jan 08 14:30:44 UTC 2025: **French Far-Right Leader Jean-Marie Le Pen Dies, Sparking Divided Reactions**

PARIS, FRANCE—The death of Jean-Marie Le Pen, co-founder of France’s main postwar far-right movement, has ignited a firestorm of conflicting reactions across the country. Le Pen, who died Tuesday at age 96, was celebrated by some and condemned by others, highlighting the deep divisions he created throughout his political career.

While the French presidency stated that Le Pen’s legacy would be judged by history, celebrations erupted in several cities following the announcement of his death. Hundreds gathered in public spaces, engaging in jubilant displays including fireworks and champagne toasts. These demonstrations were met with strong criticism from government officials. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau condemned the celebrations as “shameful,” emphasizing the need for restraint and dignity following the death of any individual, regardless of political affiliation. Similar sentiments were expressed by Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu and government spokesperson Sophie Primas.

In contrast, some on the left hailed the demonstrations, viewing them as a rejection of Le Pen’s legacy of racism and anti-Semitism. Mathilde Panot, parliamentary whip of the hard-left France Unbowed, linked the outpouring of public sentiment to the spirit of the Charlie Hebdo massacre anniversary, characterizing Le Pen as an “enemy of the Republic.” Others, while acknowledging the inappropriateness of celebrating someone’s death, refused to shy away from criticizing his controversial career.

Incidents of violence occurred during some of the celebratory gatherings. Seven arrests were made in Lyon following acts of vandalism, and three more in Paris.

Le Pen’s daughter, Marine Le Pen, who assumed leadership of the National Rally (formerly the National Front), described her father as a “warrior” and acknowledged the mourning of many supporters. However, she has worked to distance the party from his more controversial past, a process she previously termed “dediabolisation.”

The contrasting reactions to Le Pen’s death underscore the enduring impact of his political career and the profound divisions that remain within French society. A family funeral is planned for Saturday.
