Tue Jan 07 23:36:02 UTC 2025: **India on High Alert as Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Cases Emerge**

NEW DELHI – India’s health authorities are on high alert following the confirmation of seven cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a common respiratory virus, across several states. While health officials stress there is no cause for widespread panic, the central government has advised states to increase surveillance for respiratory illnesses and launch public awareness campaigns.

The first cases were reported in Karnataka (two), followed by Gujarat and Maharashtra (two each), and Tamil Nadu (one). Symptoms are similar to the common cold, typically resolving within a few days. However, children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are advised to exercise caution.

Several state health ministers have issued statements reassuring the public and emphasizing that HMPV is not a new virus and is not as dangerous as COVID-19. They have urged citizens to practice good hygiene, including frequent handwashing, wearing masks in crowded areas, and seeking medical attention if symptoms persist.

The government has also formed committees in some states to monitor the spread of HMPV and is sending samples to national laboratories for analysis. While no deaths have been reported, health officials are coordinating closely with the central government to ensure adequate healthcare resources are available and to prevent a larger outbreak. The government emphasizes that HMPV is a seasonal virus and that preventive measures similar to those for other respiratory infections are effective.
