**NEW DELHI** – The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that the Delhi Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on February 5th, 2025, with vote counting scheduled for February 8th. The announcement, made at a press conference by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, comes ahead of the current Assembly’s term ending on February 23rd.
The election will see a three-way contest between the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, aiming for a third consecutive term; the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), determined to wrest control; and the Congress, contesting independently.
The ECI also revealed that India is on the verge of reaching one billion voters, a milestone Mr. Kumar described as a new record. He further highlighted that 2024 witnessed a global surge in democratic elections, with two-thirds of the world’s population participating in various polls.
The announcement was met with immediate reactions from the contesting parties. The AAP, facing allegations of having its Chief Minister’s residence revoked by the BJP-led central government, pledged continued service to the people of Delhi. The BJP, meanwhile, expressed confidence in securing a “double-engine” government (BJP rule at both state and national levels) after the election results.
The ECI addressed concerns regarding electoral roll manipulation and Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) integrity, asserting that rigorous processes are in place to ensure fair and transparent elections. The commission showcased the EVMs’ successful track record in judicial scrutiny, emphasizing their reliability. Over 13,000 polling stations will be set up across Delhi.
The last date for filing nominations is January 17th, with scrutiny on January 18th. The upcoming election will see over 15.5 million voters participating in shaping the future of Delhi.
