Wed Jan 08 10:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Bombay Shaving CEO Claims Most Indians Only Work for Money, Highlights Wealth Inequality

**Mumbai, India** – Shantanu Deshpande, CEO of Bombay Shaving Company, has sparked a national conversation after claiming that the vast majority of Indian employees are unhappy in their jobs and would quit if their basic financial needs were met.

In a LinkedIn post, Deshpande argued that financial security is the sole motivator for most workers, regardless of their profession or industry. He asserted that if a universal basic income-type system were implemented, providing financial sustenance, a staggering 99% of the workforce would abandon their current positions. This observation, he stated, applied across the board, from blue-collar workers to government employees and even those employed by “employee-friendly” startups.

Deshpande criticized the current work culture, likening it to a system that exploits workers with the promise of a paycheck as the sole incentive, a system he argues has persisted for centuries. He further highlighted the stark wealth inequality in India, noting that a small fraction (approximately 2,000 families) control a substantial portion of the nation’s wealth and pay a disproportionately low amount of taxes – less than 1.8 percent, according to his post.

The CEO concluded his post with a call for greater generosity and support from the wealthy, urging them to help alleviate the economic hardship faced by a large segment of the population. Deshpande’s provocative statements have ignited debate on workplace satisfaction, economic inequality, and the potential for alternative economic models in India.
