**New Orleans, LA** – The FBI revealed that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the suspect in the New Year’s Day truck attack on Bourbon Street, used Meta smart glasses (Ray-Ban Stories) to scout the location weeks prior to the incident. FBI New Orleans Special Agent in Charge Lyonel Myrthil announced this Sunday at a press conference.
Jabbar, who stayed in a New Orleans rental property starting October 30th, wore the glasses while cycling through the French Quarter, recording video. While he wore the glasses during the attack itself, the recording function was not activated.
The Meta smart glasses, capable of taking photos and videos, feature a front-facing LED light to indicate when the camera is active. Although the glasses have the capability to livestream via Facebook or Instagram, this function was not utilized during the attack.
A Meta spokesperson declined to comment to CNN. Meta’s website explicitly cautions against using the glasses for harmful activities such as harassment or privacy invasion. The company also offers tips on responsible use, emphasizing respect for others and obeying the law.
The FBI’s disclosure highlights concerns over the potential misuse of widely available technology, prompting renewed discussion about the responsible use of smart glasses and other similar devices. The investigation is ongoing.
