Tue Jan 07 05:28:28 UTC 2025: ## India Reassures Public Amidst HMPV Concerns

**NEW DELHI, January 7, 2025** – The Indian government has moved to quell public concerns regarding a potential surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, following reports of increased infections in China. A virtual meeting chaired by Union Health Ministry Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava with state and union territory officials concluded that current data shows no unusual rise in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases in India.

While acknowledging the seasonal increase in respiratory illnesses during winter months, the Ministry emphasized that HMPV, a virus present globally since 2001, is typically mild and self-limiting. Most infections resolve without requiring medical intervention. The Ministry reiterated that India is well-prepared to handle any potential surge in respiratory illnesses.

States have been advised to strengthen surveillance for ILI/SARI cases and to enhance public awareness campaigns focusing on preventive measures. These measures include frequent handwashing, avoiding touching the face with unwashed hands, avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals, and proper cough and sneeze etiquette. The Ministry also confirmed that adequate diagnostic facilities are available through ICMR-VRDL laboratories.

Dr. Mayank Saxena, additional director of Internal Medicine at Fortis Hospital, Noida, added that HMPV is a known virus and that no life-threatening cases have been reported to date. The government’s message is one of reassurance, emphasizing the readily available resources and the generally mild nature of the virus.
