Tue Jan 07 11:10:15 IST 2025: ## HMPV Virus Cases Emerge in India, Sparking Health Alert
**New Delhi, India** – India is on high alert following the detection of several cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that has recently caused outbreaks in China. Five cases were reported on Monday, two each in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and one in Gujarat. Two additional cases have been confirmed in Nagpur on Tuesday. All confirmed cases so far involve children.
While the emergence of HMPV has raised concerns, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda has reassured the public, stating that the government is closely monitoring the situation and that there is no cause for widespread panic. He emphasized that HMPV is not a new virus, having been identified in 2001, and that there has been no significant increase in general respiratory illnesses in India. The Ministry of Health, ICMR, and NCDC are closely monitoring the situation in China and other neighboring countries. The WHO has also acknowledged the situation and is expected to provide a report soon.
The Health Ministry has advised states to strengthen surveillance for Influenza-Like Illnesses (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI), and to increase public awareness about preventive measures such as hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and avoiding crowded places.
Several states, including Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, have issued alerts and are taking steps to prepare for potential spread. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will hold a meeting to discuss preparedness measures.
Health experts advise that HMPV spreads through respiratory droplets and can affect people of all ages, though children are particularly vulnerable. The virus is more prevalent during the winter and early spring months. Standard preventive measures, including good hygiene practices, are recommended to reduce the risk of infection. While social media comparisons to COVID-19 have emerged, experts have stated that a lockdown is not necessary at this time.
