Tue Jan 07 05:13:35 UTC 2025: ## Deadly 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Killing 53

**Kathmandu/New Delhi, January 7, 2025** – A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck near the Tibet-Nepal border early this morning, killing at least 53 people, according to Chinese state media Xinhua, as cited by AFP. The quake, which struck at 6:35 AM IST, was felt across several parts of India, including Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) in India reported that the initial 7.1 magnitude earthquake was followed by two aftershocks – a 4.7 magnitude tremor at 7:02 AM and a 4.9 magnitude tremor at 7:07 AM. The aftershocks, centered in the Xizang region of Tibet, had depths of 10km and 30km respectively.

While tremors were strongly felt in Bihar, causing residents to evacuate buildings, there have been no immediate reports of significant property damage in India. However, the death toll in Tibet is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.

Nepal, situated in a highly seismically active zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, is prone to earthquakes. The region’s geological instability was tragically highlighted in 2015, when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake claimed nearly 9,000 lives and injured over 22,000. Today’s earthquake serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing seismic threat to the region.
