Tue Jan 07 07:46:37 UTC 2025: ## Manipur Villagers Protest Potential Withdrawal of Central Forces from Uyok Hills

**Imphal, January 7, 2025** – Villagers in Manipur are staging a sit-in protest, fearing the withdrawal of central forces from the Uyok Hills. Recent clashes between militants and security personnel in the area have heightened tensions, and residents of Thamnapokpi, Sanasabi, and Yaingangpokpi villages are concerned that removing the Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) would leave them vulnerable to further attacks.

The protest began on Monday, following unconfirmed reports suggesting the central forces’ relocation under pressure from Kuki organizations. These organizations have been protesting an alleged lathi charge on women by security forces on December 31st. The situation escalated on January 3rd when a mob attacked the Kangpokpi district Superintendent of Police’s office, injuring the officer.

“We are camping here to plead with the CRPF and BSF not to succumb to pressure,” said Mangi Leima, a protester. Leima claims that withdrawing the forces would allow armed miscreants to attack the villages again. This fear stems from a gunfight last month between suspected tribal militants and security forces, which left four people injured, including a policeman. The ensuing operation led to the deployment of central forces in Saibol village and the dismantling of illegal bunkers.

Manipur has been embroiled in ethnic clashes between Kuki and Meitei communities since May 2023, resulting in over 250 deaths and thousands displaced. The current protest highlights the ongoing fragility of the situation and the villagers’ deep concerns for their safety.
