CHENNAI, INDIA (January 7, 2025) – This year’s Chennai Margazhi music season saw a refreshing wave of innovation, with Carnatic music performances taking place in unconventional settings across the city. From restaurants and antique stores to hospitals, artists embraced new spaces to engage wider audiences.
Veena artiste Nirmala Rajasekar performed at the Southern Spice restaurant in the Taj Coromandel hotel, captivating the audience with her renditions of both traditional and original compositions. Inspired by the positive response, she advocated for more art-friendly spaces in unexpected locations, such as grocery stores.
The Kutty Kutchery Festival, curated by Bharatanatyam-Kuchipudi dancer Laasya Narasimhachari, pushed boundaries further. Performances were held in intimate settings like Rare Lily, an antique store, and the backyard of a saree store, aiming for a close and personal experience between artists and listeners. The festival highlighted the importance of understanding the artist’s unique perspective and artistry.
Hospitals also joined the musical celebration. MGM Healthcare hosted concerts featuring Carnatic music sisters Anahita and Apoorva, and the Indian Choral Ensemble, whose performance included both Carnatic classics and popular film themes. The initiative provided a moment of respite for patients and staff, demonstrating the healing power of music. Kauvery Hospital is also hosting a series of concerts throughout the week.
