**Vienna, Austria** – Herbert Kickl, leader of Austria’s Freedom Party (FPÖ), has been tasked with forming a new government, marking a potential historic shift towards far-right leadership in the country. This comes after President Alexander Van der Bellen concluded that no other viable options existed following failed coalition attempts.
The FPÖ secured 28.8% of the vote in September’s election, surpassing the conservative Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP). However, initial efforts to form a government excluded the FPÖ due to its far-right stance. Following the collapse of these efforts, the ÖVP indicated a willingness to cooperate with Kickl.
President Van der Bellen, while expressing concerns, acknowledged the lack of alternatives and gave Kickl the mandate to negotiate a coalition with the ÖVP. He emphasized the importance of upholding constitutional principles and addressing Austria’s economic challenges, including recession and rising unemployment. The President also highlighted the need for constructive European cooperation, particularly given the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The FPÖ’s platform, “Fortress Austria,” advocates for stricter immigration policies, including “remigration of uninvited foreigners,” and calls for ending sanctions against Russia and withdrawing from the European Sky Shield Initiative. Kickl has also voiced criticism of EU “elites” and sought a return of certain powers to Austria.
While a successful coalition between the FPÖ and ÖVP isn’t guaranteed, the current political landscape leaves few other options. A new election is considered likely to further strengthen the FPÖ’s position. The new government will face significant economic and geopolitical challenges, and its formation represents a significant turning point for Austrian politics.
