**Kathmandu, Nepal –** A strong earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck near Dinggye, China, at 6:50 a.m. local time on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. The tremors were felt strongly in Kathmandu and surrounding areas, including Kavrepalanchwok and Dhading districts, causing widespread panic and prompting residents to evacuate their homes.
While initial reports indicate no significant damage in Kathmandu, areas near Mount Everest, including Lobuche and Namche, also experienced the quake and subsequent aftershocks. A government official in Namche reported strong shaking but no immediate knowledge of damage.
A separate, but related, magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck near Shigatse, Tibet, at 9:05 a.m. local time (0105 GMT). This quake, with a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), caused damage to buildings in Shigatse and resulted in people fleeing into the streets in neighboring Nepal and India. Video footage confirmed damage to shop fronts in the nearby town of Lhatse.
The National Earthquake Measurement Centre in Kathmandu and the China Earthquake Networks Centre both reported the seismic activity. Authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the damage caused by both earthquakes.
