**DIMAPUR, ASSAM –** Three miners are feared dead after a coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district flooded on Monday, trapping nine workers. Rescue teams, including army divers, helicopters, and engineers, worked through the night but have only spotted three bodies, which remain unrecovered.
The flooding, according to Dima Hasao district police chief Mayank Kumar, resulted from the miners inadvertently hitting an underground water channel. The trapped miners have been underground since Monday.
Images released by the army show rescue crews using specialized equipment at the mine site. The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by miners in India’s northeast, where coal mine disasters are sadly common. A similar incident in Meghalaya in 2019 resulted in at least 15 deaths when an illegal mine flooded. The rescue operation continues.
