Tue Jan 07 14:10:00 IST 2025: ## Iran Announces Makran Coast as Potential New Capital

**Tehran, Iran –** The Iranian government has announced the Makran coast as a potential location for a new capital city, ending decades of debate on relocating the administrative center from Tehran. Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajjerani confirmed the location in a weekly press conference, stating that two committees have been formed; one to assess Tehran’s current challenges and the other to study the economic potential of a sea-based economy in the Makran region. She emphasized that while research continues, the new capital will undoubtedly be located in southern Iran.

First Vice President Mohammadreza Aref reiterated the seriousness of the plan, highlighting the limitations of providing services in the overcrowded Tehran. He cited the Makran coast’s strategic location and lack of significant infrastructural limitations compared to other previously considered locations.

The Makran coast, stretching 900 kilometers along the Balochistan coast, offers significant strategic advantages. Its access to the Sea of Oman and the Indian Ocean, including the crucial port of Chabahar, provides direct access to international waters. The region boasts natural resources including oil, gas, and fisheries, and its location outside the volatile Persian Gulf offers enhanced geopolitical stability. Further development could position Makran as a vital hub for Central Asia, the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The potential for tourism development is also considerable. Chabahar port plays a key strategic role in facilitating trade with Afghanistan and Central Asia, particularly through a ten-year agreement between Iran and India for the development and operation of the Shahid Beheshti port.

While the plan is still under development, the announcement marks a significant step towards potentially relocating Iran’s capital city.
