Sun Jan 05 22:30:00 UTC 2025: ## OYO Restricts Unmarried Couples’ Check-ins in Meerut, Plans Nationwide Rollout

**Meerut, Uttar Pradesh –** Hotel booking platform OYO has implemented a new policy restricting unmarried couples from checking into its partner hotels in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The policy, effective immediately, requires all couples to present proof of their relationship upon check-in, applying to both online and in-person bookings.

OYO stated that partner hotels have the discretion to accept or reject bookings based on their assessment of local sensitivities. The company frames this move as part of a broader initiative to enhance safety and promote longer stays for families, students, business travelers, religious groups, and solo travelers. The company cited feedback from civil society groups and residents in several cities as prompting the change.

While the policy is currently limited to Meerut, OYO plans to expand it to other cities based on the feedback received. The company is also undertaking pan-India initiatives, including joint seminars with partner hotels and police to address issues of unsafe hospitality and crack down on unauthorized OYO-branded hotels.

OYO’s regional head, Pawas Sharma, emphasized the company’s commitment to responsible hospitality while acknowledging its obligation to work with law enforcement and community groups. He stated that the policy will be reviewed periodically. The decision has sparked debate regarding individual freedoms and the balance between respecting local customs and ensuring equal access to hospitality services.
