Mon Jan 06 12:10:08 UTC 2025: ## Nine Killed in Maoist Bomb Blast in Chhattisgarh

**Raipur, Chhattisgarh –** A deadly Maoist ambush in Bijapur district, Chhattisgarh, has claimed the lives of nine people, including eight police officers and a driver. The victims were traveling in a police vehicle that struck a roadside bomb on Monday, according to a police statement. The blast, reportedly set off by Maoist rebels, left a significant crater in the road.

The incident occurred as the security personnel were returning from an anti-Maoist operation conducted on Saturday, which resulted in the deaths of four rebels and one police officer. Vivekanand Sinha, chief of the state police’s anti-Maoist operations, confirmed the casualties.

The Maoist insurgency, which has spanned decades, has resulted in over 10,000 deaths. The rebels, also known as Naxalites, claim to fight for the rights of poor farmers and landless laborers, alleging exploitation by large mining companies.

While the government has intensified its efforts to quell the rebellion, killing 287 rebels and arresting/receiving the surrender of over 1800 suspected Naxalites in 2024, the recent attack highlights the ongoing conflict. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently issued a warning to the rebels, urging surrender or face a decisive crackdown by early 2026. Despite significant gains by authorities in recent years, restricting the rebels’ area of operation and investing in infrastructure and social programs, the incident underscores the persistent threat posed by the Maoist movement.
