**New Delhi, January 6, 2025** – Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla today lauded the significant contributions of women leaders in panchayati raj institutions, highlighting their positive impact on rural development. Addressing over 500 tribal women representatives from 22 states and union territories at the ‘Panchayat Se Parliament 2.0’ event, Mr. Birla emphasized the crucial role of women in driving socio-economic change.

He cited examples of women entrepreneurs creating self-reliant villages through traditional crafts, online businesses, and local production. Mr. Birla stressed the importance of supporting these women-led enterprises to access global markets, boosting economic growth while preserving India’s cultural heritage.

The Speaker noted that women’s leadership in panchayats leads to more effective and sensitive governance, better addressing community concerns such as clean drinking water, sanitation, and education. Their unique experiences and problem-solving skills allow them to develop more robust solutions to local challenges, he added.

Mr. Birla also highlighted the increasing representation of women in panchayati raj institutions, with several states exceeding the mandated 33% reservation, some even reaching over 50%. He emphasized that this is not merely symbolic but a crucial step towards sustainable and inclusive governance.
