Sun Jan 05 14:29:25 UTC 2025: ## Gaza Journalist Killed in Israeli Airstrike, Death Toll Surpasses 45,000

**Gaza City, January 5, 2025** – Palestinian journalist and writer Mohammad Hijazi was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza today, bringing the number of media workers killed in the ongoing conflict to 220 since October 7, 2023. His death comes amidst a brutal 24-hour period that saw at least 88 other Palestinians killed and 208 injured in Israeli attacks across the besieged territory, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

Hijazi, known for his outspoken criticism of the conflict, was among nearly 90 Palestinians killed in the past day alone. The intensified bombardment and siege of northern Gaza, imposed on October 5th, has forced thousands to flee their homes, with even aid organizations blocked from delivering essential supplies.

The death toll of Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks since October 2023 now stands at at least 45,805, with an estimated 109,064 injured. The crisis is further exacerbated by the lack of resources in the devastated region; a baby, Yousef, died from the cold, the eighth infant death in recent days due to the harsh conditions faced by displaced Palestinians living in inadequate shelters. His mother recounted her heartbreaking experience to Al Jazeera.

The Israeli military claimed responsibility for striking over 100 “terror targets” in the past two days. However, reports from Al Jazeera correspondent Hani Mahmoud detail the devastating impact of these strikes on civilian populations, including a family of 15 buried under rubble in Gaza City, and three others killed while sheltering in a tent. Overwhelmed hospitals struggle to cope with the influx of casualties, with a severe lack of medical supplies and pain medication.

The escalating violence continues even as indirect negotiations for a prisoner release deal resume in Qatar, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States. The international community continues to condemn the Israeli offensive, with the International Court of Justice having previously declared the operation “plausibly” amounted to genocide. The International Criminal Court has also issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. The situation in Gaza remains critical, with mounting casualties and a dire humanitarian crisis unfolding.
