**Bengaluru, India** – India has reported its first confirmed cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory infection causing flu-like symptoms, in two infants in Bengaluru. An eight-month-old is currently hospitalized recovering, while a three-month-old has been discharged. These cases come amidst a reported surge in HMPV cases in China, where social media posts indicate hospitals are overwhelmed with patients suffering from various respiratory illnesses, including influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19.
HMPV, first identified in 2001, typically presents with symptoms such as cough, fever, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, and sore throat, usually appearing three to six days after exposure. While affecting people of all ages, young children under five, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness requiring hospitalization. The virus spreads through close contact, including touching contaminated surfaces and respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes.
Currently, there is no vaccine for HMPV, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms. While similar to the common cold, initial HMPV infections can be more severe.
To prevent the spread of HMPV and other respiratory illnesses, health officials recommend frequent handwashing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based sanitizer, covering coughs and sneezes, wearing a mask when sick, avoiding touching the face with unwashed hands, and practicing self-isolation when unwell. Individuals with pre-existing lung conditions are urged to exercise extra caution. Experts advise seeking medical attention if symptoms worsen.
