Mon Jan 06 11:35:00 UTC 2025: ## India Detects Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Cases Amidst China Outbreak

**Bengaluru, India/Ahmedabad, India** – India has reported its first cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory infection causing flu-like symptoms, coinciding with a surge in HMPV cases in China. Three infants, an eight-month-old in Bengaluru (currently recovering), a three-month-old in Bengaluru (discharged), and a two-month-old in Ahmedabad, have tested positive for the virus. While HMPV is not typically life-threatening, young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness requiring hospitalization.

Symptoms of HMPV include cough, fever, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, and sore throat, typically appearing three to six days after exposure. The virus spreads through close contact, similar to other respiratory illnesses, via coughing, sneezing, and contact with contaminated surfaces. Currently, no vaccine exists for HMPV, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms.

While HMPV symptoms often mimic the common cold, initial infections tend to be more severe. The surge in China, where HMPV is circulating alongside other viruses like influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19, has prompted concerns globally. Social media reports suggest Chinese hospitals are overwhelmed with respiratory illness patients.

To mitigate the risk of HMPV and other respiratory infections, health officials advise frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, wearing masks in crowded areas, avoiding contact with sick individuals, and practicing self-isolation when unwell. Individuals with pre-existing lung conditions are urged to take extra precautions. Consult a doctor for diagnosis and treatment if symptoms worsen.
