Mon Jan 06 16:07:48 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru BBMP Seals Thousands of Properties for Unpaid Property Tax

**Bengaluru, January 6, 2025** – The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has taken strong action against property tax defaulters, sealing 6,914 non-residential properties and attaching 81,644 more this fiscal year (2024-25) up to January 4th. A total of 206,753 properties owe ₹329.15 crore in unpaid taxes. This represents one of the highest numbers of closures since the end of the BBMP’s One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme.

The OTS scheme, launched in February and extended multiple times until November 30th, offered significant relief by waiving compounding interest and reducing penalties. Despite the scheme and subsequent door-to-door awareness campaigns, a substantial number of properties remain delinquent. In the past week alone, the BBMP sealed 203 non-residential properties and attached 180.

The BBMP’s overall tax collection for the current fiscal year (until January 4th) stands at ₹4,370 crore – a 25% increase compared to the same period last year. However, this still falls short of the ₹5,210 crore target. The East Zone had the highest number of closures (77), while Dasarahalli had the fewest (2).

Furthermore, the BBMP has revised property taxes for 15,731 properties, identifying discrepancies where commercial properties were paying residential rates. This revision resulted in an estimated ₹398.49 crore in additional dues, of which ₹114.82 crore has already been recovered.
