NEW DELHI—The Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued a statement calming public concerns regarding a recent surge in respiratory illnesses in China, primarily attributed to influenza, RSV, and HMPV viruses. While acknowledging reports from China, the ministry emphasized that the situation is not unusual given the current flu season and that these viruses are already circulating globally, including in India.
A joint monitoring group meeting, involving experts from the WHO, ICMR, NCDC, and other agencies, concluded that India’s existing surveillance systems for influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and severe acute respiratory illnesses (SARI) show no unusual increase in cases. Data from the ICMR and IDSP networks corroborate this finding, with hospital authorities also reporting no surge in respiratory illness cases beyond typical seasonal variations.
The ministry stated that India maintains a robust surveillance system and is closely monitoring the situation in China, requesting regular updates from the WHO. As a precautionary measure, the ICMR will increase the number of laboratories testing for HMPV and will monitor trends throughout the year. Recent nationwide preparedness drills have demonstrated India’s readiness to handle any potential increase in respiratory illnesses.
Director-General of DGHS, Dr. Atul Goel, advised the public to practice general precautions against respiratory infections, such as avoiding contact with others when experiencing symptoms and taking standard cold and fever medications. He emphasized that there is no cause for alarm. The ministry reiterated its commitment to maintaining vigilance and responding promptly to any emerging health challenges.
