**Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu –** The first jallikattu, or bull-taming event, of 2025 took place on Saturday in Thatchankurichi village, Pudukottai district, marking the start of the bull-taming season ahead of Pongal. The event, which saw the release of 459 bulls and participation of 290 tamers, was attended by Law Minister S. Regupathy and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Siva V. Meyyanathan.

However, the excitement came at a cost. Twenty people, including bull owners, tamers, and spectators, sustained injuries, with nine requiring referral to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. One bull also suffered a head injury and was sent to the Veterinary College and Research Institute at Orathanadu.

Despite the injuries, organizers emphasized safety measures. A 30-member veterinary team was present to treat injured bulls, and all bulls underwent dope tests before participating. The event, which concluded around 3:20 p.m., was overseen by Collector M. Aruna, who administered an oath to the tamers. Participants expressed pride in their participation, highlighting both the thrill of the competition and the respect for the animals.
