Fri Jan 03 20:40:00 UTC 2025: **Pittsburgh Area Under Snow Squall Warning; Weekend Cold Snap Expected**

PITTSBURGH, PA – A snow squall warning is in effect for much of the Pittsburgh area until 4:15 p.m. today, prompting warnings of hazardous driving conditions due to heavy snow and significantly reduced visibility. The warning impacts major roadways including I-579, I-76, I-279, I-376 near Pittsburgh, and several interstate and US routes in surrounding areas of West Virginia, Ohio, and New Castle, PA.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the entire viewing area until 10 a.m. Saturday, with a winter storm warning issued for the highest elevations of Westmoreland, Fayette, and Indiana counties during the same timeframe. Lake-effect snow bands are expected, particularly north of I-80, potentially adding an inch of snow in some areas and reducing visibility.

Steeler fans heading to today’s game should brace for frigid temperatures in the low 20s with wind chills in the low teens. While Sunday will remain cold, brighter skies are forecast.

Another weather system is expected late Sunday night into Monday, bringing the potential for more snow, particularly south of I-70. Areas north of Pittsburgh may see less accumulation. Monday has been declared an Impact Day in anticipation of this system.
