**NEW DELHI** – A top Indian health official has urged the public to remain calm amidst concerns over the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China. Dr. Atul Goel, of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), stressed that HMPV is similar to other respiratory viruses, typically causing mild cold-like symptoms, and only potentially causing flu-like symptoms in the very young and very old.
Dr. Goel stated that data analysis shows no significant increase in HMPV cases in India during December 2024, and no large outbreaks have been reported from any Indian medical institutions. He noted that respiratory infections generally increase during winter months, and hospitals are well-prepared to handle the typical rise in cases.
The official advised the public to take standard precautions against all respiratory infections, including avoiding close contact with those exhibiting symptoms, using separate handkerchiefs for coughing and sneezing, and taking over-the-counter medications for cold and fever as needed. He emphasized that there is no cause for widespread alarm.
The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is closely monitoring respiratory and influenza cases and is liaising with international agencies. This reassurance comes amidst global anxieties sparked by the spread of the virus in China and echoes of the COVID-19 pandemic. While China maintains it has been transparent about its handling of COVID-19 information, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has reiterated its call for greater data sharing from the country.
