**Sydney, Australia** – Jasprit Bumrah etched his name in cricketing history on Saturday, surpassing Bishan Singh Bedi’s long-standing record for most Test wickets by an Indian bowler in Australia. In the second day of the fifth and final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test, Bumrah claimed his 32nd wicket of the series, surpassing Bedi’s 31 wickets achieved during India’s 1977-78 tour.
The milestone wicket was that of Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne, dismissed via a thin edge caught by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant after a successful DRS review. Bumrah had already dismissed Usman Khawaja on Day 1.
Bumrah’s achievement is even more remarkable considering he is leading the Indian team in the absence of Rohit Sharma. This is the second time he’s captained the side in this series. His performance comes after he recently cemented his position as the world’s No. 1 Test bowler in the ICC rankings.
Beyond the record-breaking performance, Bumrah also contributed significantly with the bat, scoring 22 runs in a valuable lower-order cameo on Day 1. The day also witnessed a brief on-field spat between Bumrah and Australian opener Sam Konstas after a perceived time-wasting incident involving Khawaja.
India’s win in the Perth Test, where Bumrah also led the team, further highlights his all-round contribution to the team’s success. The final Test match continues.
