Fri Jan 03 00:45:49 UTC 2025: **South Korean Arrest Warrant Suspended After Standoff at President’s Residence**
Seoul, South Korea – An attempt by South Korean authorities to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol was suspended Friday following a tense standoff with his security detail. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) stated that executing the arrest warrant proved “effectively impossible” due to the Presidential Security Service (PSS) blocking access to Yoon’s residence.
The CIO had sought to detain Yoon on charges of insurrection and abuse of power stemming from his controversial declaration of martial law on December 3rd. Investigators arrived at Yoon’s residence early Friday morning, but PSS chief Park Jong-joon refused entry, citing security restrictions. A large police presence was deployed to manage potential clashes between pro- and anti-Yoon protesters.
Yoon’s legal team argued the investigation was unlawful. Meanwhile, the opposition Democratic Party urged the acting president, Choi Sang-mok, to intervene. Thousands of Yoon’s supporters rallied outside his residence, vowing their support.
Yoon, who faces potential life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted, has defended his actions, claiming the martial law declaration was necessary to combat pro-North Korea forces and investigate alleged election fraud. He remains suspended from his duties following his impeachment on December 14th. The Constitutional Court now has up to six months to decide whether to uphold the impeachment. The arrest warrant’s suspension leaves the political situation in South Korea highly uncertain.
